We lost a Police Officer today

A Part Of America Died

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call... of himself gave his all,
And a part of America died...

On Saturday, St. Paul Minnesota lost a Police Officer.  He was on duty and called to a Car Jacking and was gunned down in his Squad car.  Two suspects were involved, one suspect allegedly attacked another officer called in to apprehend the suspects and was shot and killed by that officer.  A swat team was called in and they located the second suspect.  This is always so sad and senseless.  A family lost a son, brother, husband and father.  I grew up in St. Paul, it's a tough hood and it's hard to get by,  I no longer live in that city of my youth.

I think this will be on my mind for awhile.  Counting her blessings today, Jane

  1. On my mind today too Jane. I have always worried for my husband everytime he goes on duty. His career has served us well, but it is always a fear of mine that he may not come home. I was so saddened by the news of this man and his dear family. My prayers are with them.

    How are you?
    Everyhting's so different in your blog! I like it!
    Unfortunatelly this is very common here, you know? Policemen here are huting by those bad guys, traffic dealers mostly.

  3. I'm so sorry to hear this terrible news. I am from a family of firefighters, and can relate to the great loss when one of their own dies. They are all heroes in my book.
    Thanks for sharing that beautiful poem. May God bless all officers and keep them safe.

  4. Yes, this is on my mind a lot too. Tomorrow a very high profile trial begins in my city involving a police officer who was killed 4 years ago. The killer had fled to Mexico, but had been caught there and brought back to face the charges. After 4 long years of waiting the trial finally begins tomorrow. I pray he will be brought to justice and that all of our officers will be safer in the years to come.
